Up-date your decor!

Need an update for your home?  Here are some quick tips to change the appearance or mood of your space without a large expense, often with just a few hours of work.  We love to shop the discount stores like Home Goods, TJ Max and Marshalls since they often have interesting accessories, pillows and even occasional furniture (end tables, side chairs, benches) that can add just the right touch on a budget. In  San Diego and New York, I often find great furniture cast offs at the Salvation Army!

1. Create a new look by moving your existing furniture room to new positions. Try 'floating' a large piece by moving it off the wall.   Can you re-purpose pieces from one room and use in another? A dresser can become an entry table and an occasional table may become a nightstand in the bedroom.

A sisal area rug warms a minimalist  dining room.
2.One of the fastest ways to change your interior is with an area rug. Flooring is a large surface and covering one section can add fantastic texture and color to totally change the perception of a room.

3. Add color with throw and floor pillows. Have more time?  Paint a bold color on one accent wall. Add a decorative effect for drama. Stripes are a great accent although require patience!

4. Bring in patterns with fabric.  If you have shades or blinds, add a curtain panel. The fabric adds a whole new look and as a bonus, helps stop the drafts. Drape a dresser with fabric runners...even throws.  Use a runner or tablecloth on the main table for a seasonal change.
New pillows & a drapery panel quickly reform a bedroom.

5. Change the theme of your decor. Instead of the traditional vases and candles, try statuary. In lieu of ceramic or porcelain, experiment with glass. Change the color scheme of accessories. Remember that fewer and large pieces will create impact.
