Solutions for fading daylight

As we lose daylight due to the onset of winter and daylight savings, try these quick tips to bring light back into your spaces:
A sleek wall sconce adds light.
  1. Install solar tubes in dark hallways and rooms for a permanent solution.
  2. Have a skylight? Add LED or rope lighting to the perimeter.
  3. Hang mirrors to reflect light from your brightest windows into your rooms. Place lamps (if possible) in front of the mirrors for additional reflected light after dark.
  4. Change out old yellow incandescent bulbs to cookl white energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.
  5. Paint brighter colors onto accent walls.
  6. Add an up-light in a corner of a room, behind sofas, plants and furniture.
  7. Re-arrange furniture so reading chairs sit closer to windows.
  8. Add candlelight at your focal point whether it is in a fireplace, A/V unit or other furniture - use flame less candles for safety.
  9. Hang lighted wall sconces for accent light in hallways, stairwells and flanking fireplaces and large pieces of furniture.
  10. Add low energy-consuming LED lighting in niches, curios, under stair treads and other unusual places.
  11. Place floor or table lamps in dark corners and use plug-in timers or light sensors from Lutron to turn on and off at dusk and dawn.
