Design Updates For Fall

Even the most beautifully designed homes need a periodic refresh. As summer ends and fall begins, you'll start to spend more time indoors. Make it fabulous! My clients call me in August to update for the fall and design beautiful interiors for holiday entertaining. Here are my three favorite ways to create interest and sophistication that's enduring:

1. Change a dated light fixture

Trade a ho-hum table lamp, a builder-issued chandelier, or an out of date floor lamp with something metallic, with sleek lines, and a fabulous shade.
For sophisticated modern look, add a drum shade pendant.

Create fabulous ambience in a dining room or hallway with wall sconces.

Changing a table lamp is an easy way to make a style statement. To go light and fresh, use crystal and glass. Often, going bigger and bolder than what you have is more balanced.  A lamp in an unusual shape is artistic and forever interesting.

An interesting lampshade on a table lamp or your dining room chandelier adds wonderful style. Fabrics, paper, and Mica are beautiful materials and work well whether you have a classic home, or modern minimalist one.

2. Add a luxurious area rug.

Update your carpeted floor or dress up tile or wood with a luxurious wool area rug to add warmth, pattern and texture.

Need a modern look? How about a Modriani style that's classic and geometric?

Use neutrals if you're not sure about color and pattern.  Natural rugs like sisal and seagrass are timeless.

3. Add statement accessories.

Less is more when making a change in accessories. Use larger and fewer pieces. Groupings of three items are pleasing and artistic. Bring in a bit of metal or glass for elegance. End tables are dynamic. accessories.

Mirrors are awesome accessories.  They reflect light back into a room, serve as focal points, can be artistic, and are a 'safe' way to add metallics if you want a bit of glam.

I always carry blue & white in my showroom, usually larger scale pieces so they don't get 'lost' in a large room.  Grouping them together has greater impact than spreading them around a room.

Au updated style pedestal on an end table is dynamic in a polished ebony  finish.

Remember that hardware is a fabulous accessory. It's like jewelry and can completely change the look of your kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanity, and any built in cabinetry you have.

I carry these pieces in my San Diego showroom so swing by and visit. Today, many items can be shipped directly from trade vendors to client homes. Enjoy finding the perfect, elegant update piece for your home!
