Spruce up your outdoor spaces

With spring comes the right time to get your outdoor spaces ready for summer living.  Here are some ideas to get you started.

1) Add string lights. Whether you place them wound around trees, draped through your bushes, or hanging from a trellis or under your umbrella, use sets of string lights for soft light that invites you to enjoy the outdoors.

2) Furnish the space. For permanent seating, purchase outdoor furniture that will weather well outdoors. For seasonal use, try folding chairs and tables and even create a table from large planters and glass tops and bring out a wooden bench for seating.

3) Use area rugs. Polypropylene rugs are perfect for outdoor living. They dress up a space and make the seating areas cozy and comfortable. I also use cotton and jute rugs on covered patios, decks and balconies for a more formal feel.

4) Pillows are perfect. From floor pillows to decorative accents on seating, this is one of the simplest ways to brighten an outdoor space. Using outdoor fabrics will extend their life and make them easy to clean. Try getting a mix of patterns and solids for a custom look.

5) Set the table.  Don't use your regular dishes or glasses. Purchase inexpensive sets or mix and match pieces for outdoor use only. On beautiful sunny days, set the table and enjoy the setting and look forward to outdoor dining.  Use easily washed cotton napkins, planters filled with real plants, candlesticks or hurricane lanterns and make the table look inviting.

6) Hang a chandelier. Don't worry about electricity. Use candles in lieu of the sockets. I often find fabulous old chandeliers at garage sales, thrift shops and client garages!
