Entry updates

Does your entry say what you want about the rest of your home?  Entry too small to have an impact? Phooey...here are some ideas to transform any size entry into a space that welcomes you and your guests to your space.

1) Flooring.  The smallest of entry spaces can be made fabulous with the right flooring.  Black and white tile - porcelain, stone or even vinyl - is classic yet thoroughly modern. Can't do that? Try carpet squares by Flor.   An area rug can create a welcoming stepping stone inside. Be sure to use carpet tape or pad to secure it to the existing floor.

2) Stash space.  A console or shelves create a space to drop keys, books, briefcases, etc.  and a place to display something personal.  Affixing a small board to the wall and adding front legs, creates a perfect stash space.

3) Mirrors. Reflect light into the space - if you can - by adding a mirror. A great frame, the right scale, and it can set the style tone for your home. It serves as a place for guests to check themselves before entering, and you to take a last look before you go out!

4) Lighting. The best way to change the apparent space is with lighting. Brighten a narrow space with wall sconces, hang a chandelier to dramatize a grand space, bring corners into play with up-lights, and of course, hang picture lights over your art.

5) Art.  Personalize your entry with art that reflects you and the style of your home. Whether that translates to a sculpture, a mobile, pottery or wall art, an item you love can be worked into your entryway.

6) Color. Bold or neutral, soft or dramatic, color sets the stage. In an entry, you can often find a space for a unique wall treatment. In this apartment entry, a bold vase, stair runner and scarf hanging on a grand hook, say enough!
