The importance of STYLE.

One of the most fundamental aspects to successful interior decor is knowing what your personal design style is.

Transitional style with classic lines.
Imagine needing a new car. You wander into a car dealer feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the choices. When asked, "May I help you?" you realize you have no idea what you are looking for. One of two things may happen at this point...you stomp out of the dealership feeling totally frustrated or, you end up buying something by default.; not quite what you want, but you'll be happy with it, for now.

This is the scenario professional designers often face. Working with clients becomes more of a system of wading through a hodge podge of likes and dislikes.  Most people have a vague idea of what they like, but simply lack the definition of interior design styles and a vocabulary to communicate and implement those likes. A home that reflects who you are, will always provide a place of rest, rejuvenation and happy feelings.

Thoroughly modern and minimalist.
A good design consultant will sit down and pull out the shadows of your likes and dislikes. With the information they can offer suggestions, resources and coaching or, full service start to finish room design. This is a good option. If you are a do-it-yourself type, try taking a style survey on-line. Spend some time at a local bookstore. Look through the magazine and book racks to find a look you like. It could be something in a room, the overall feel, or the mood it conveys..there really is no hard and fast rule...but it may help to determine a consistent theme or specific design style. Bring a notebook to jot down those important impressions for ready reference.    Pay attention to room color, furniture styles, accents and window treatments that repeatedly grab your attention. A theme or style will emerge...take your time, enjoy the process.

Billy Baldwin, a famous interior designer, said, "Be faithful to your own taste, because nothing you really like is ever out of style".  While there are no rules you must follow, there are guidelines for balance, harmony, form, scale and color. Enjoy the process of exploring, implementing and finally relaxing in the home that reflects your own personal interior decor style.
