Having a celebration party for New Year's Eve but don't want to start 2011 with a mess? Try these tips for a fun and festive evening that doesn't require a long clean-up.
1) Set the stage. Lighting and scent add to a festive atmosphere. Use room sprays or scented candles to fragrance your home. Dim the lights, add strings of mini-lights where possible, and use real or flame-less candles on tables, in wall sconces, and throughout the rooms. Don't forget party hats and noisemakers..forgo throwing paper since it will make cleanup easier. Add some music and voila you are ready.
2) Serve buffet style. A buffet makes it easier to offer multiple dishes. You can set up stations for main dishes, cheeses, desserts and lighter fare. Invite guests to bring a special dish. 3) Use simple decor. Place glass bowls filled with floating candles around your buffet and wind in live or faux greenery. Re-use your live holiday plants but add garland or other glittery decor. Place candles on mirrors for bright and festive lighting. Balloons area great decor idea that are simple and inexpensive. Use white, silver or other metallic colors and tie them odd with metallic ribbon. A clock theme is always fun so be creative!
4) Create a self-serve bar. If you have a bar space you are fortunate, if not, set one up! With a table runner, placemats or decorative tray as the base, place ice bowls or buckets, serveware, shakers and stirrers. Set out glassware and add some decorative elements.
5) Show them where... Set aside wicker baskets or large planters for throw away or recyclable items. Make them festive and guide your guests to use them. Have trays for glassware and encourage empties to be placed back.
